Something Different: The Afterschool English Program

What¡¯s the Afterschool English Program?

The Afterschool English Program is an alternative program for the Korean Government. It's mandate is to improve the English speaking abilities of elementary school students in public schools. The Afterschool English Program changes a small tuition fee, and is an alternative to attending a private language institute.

Primary School Education is mandatory in Korea, and is funded by the Korean Government. However, the Afterschool English Program is operated with a small tuition fee for those who wish to participate in extra English classes.

Important: ¡°The Afterschool English Program¡± in Korea. Operates in two yaws.

One, way is that the schoool operates the program by itself. The second way, is that the school operates the program through a non-profit organization that specializes in education.

  1. School runs the Program itself. The native teacher is responsible for developing a curriculum, programs, dealing with parents and doing all administration work. These conditions make it difficult for the teacher to maintain a good working environment because the teacher bears the responsibility for everything without outside help.
  2. The Program is run by a non-profit organiaztion. This way of running the Program is much easier for the native teacher because all programs, curriculum and teacher's manuals are provided. There is staff that supports the teacher's work : this staff normally does all the non-teaching work (dealing with parents, administration). The staff is also available to help the native teacher adjust to life in Korea : this way of running the program creates a better working environment for the native teacher.

However, the most important fact you have to have in mind is that you get to choose an organization you can trust. And that¡¯s why we are here, the ¡°KAPEE¡±, the Korean Association of Primary English Education.

What is KAPEE?

<KAPEE>

KAPEE stands for The Korean Association of Primary English Education, and is a non-profit organization. KAPEE was founded in April 1995 bt of English professors from National Universities of Education in Korea. This was when the Ministry of Education officially announced that English was to become one of the major subjects for Primary Education in Korea.

The goals of KAPEE are to share English Education Theories and field information with each other in order to promote English Education within primary schools in Korea. They do this by hosting conferences and seminars and by publishing academic journals and by doing teachers training. In their quest to promote English, KAPEE is qursuing many activities and and Afterschool English Program is their main focus.

<Textbook>

KAPEE has its own English Program entitled English star. The English Star Program teaches children a mare natural approach to learning English : it imitates the way that a native English speaker learns the language.

<Management> KAPEE supports teachers, and helps maintain teacher¡¯s skills through a well organized and professional education system including:

  • Introduction training.
  • Periodical training.
  • Orientation.
